American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has achieved a significant milestone in corporate climate action, with its emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation affirms that Amex GBT’s near and long-term targets align with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard, positioning the company as a leader in the business travel industry for environmental responsibility.
Amex GBT’s commitment includes reaching net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by 2050. The company’s targets span across scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, covering everything from its own operations to the wider supply chain.
Near-term targets include:
- Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 80% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline.
- Reducing scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% within the same timeframe, which covers upstream activities such as purchased goods, transportation, and employee commuting.
- Engaging 67% of airline suppliers by emissions to set their own science-based targets by 2028.
Long-term targets extend these commitments:
- Reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2050.
- Achieving a 90% reduction in scope 3 emissions within the same period.
