TotalEnergies to Supply 1.5 TWh Renewable Power to STMicroelectronics in France
Listen to this story:
  • Long-term renewable commitment: TotalEnergies will supply 1.5 TWh of renewable power to STMicroelectronics under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) starting in 2025.
  • Industry-first agreement: The contract is the first of its kind in France to offer a 15-year baseload renewable energy supply.
  • Carbon neutrality push: This deal supports STMicroelectronics’ goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2027 through 100% renewable energy sourcing.

TotalEnergies and STMicroelectronics have signed a physical Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply renewable electricity to STMicroelectronics’ sites in France. The agreement, commencing in January 2025, guarantees 1.5 TWh of green energy over 15 years.

The electricity will be sourced from two new wind and solar farms (75 MW) operated by TotalEnergies, ensuring a stable supply through structuration services that transform intermittent production into a constant baseload of renewable power.

Industry Milestone

This marks the first 15-year renewable energy PPA of its kind in France. The deal was driven by the environmental and community benefits of the wind and solar projects.

We are delighted to sign this agreement with STMicroelectronics, which demonstrates our ability to provide long-term and innovative clean firm power solutions tailored to our customers’ needs,” said Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies.

STMicroelectronics’ Sustainability Goals

STMicroelectronics is targeting carbon neutrality in its operations (Scope 1, 2, and partially Scope 3 emissions) by 2027. This includes transitioning to 100% renewable energy.

PPAs will play a major role in our transition, and we have already signed several to support ST’s operations in Italy and Malaysia. Starting in 2025, this PPA with TotalEnergies will provide a significant level of renewable energy for ST’s operations in France,” said Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics.

Expanding Renewable Solutions

TotalEnergies has secured similar renewable energy contracts with major global companies, including Saint-Gobain, Air Liquide, Amazon, LyondellBasell, Merck, Microsoft, Orange, and Sasol. This further underscores its ability to deliver tailored clean energy solutions for corporate decarbonization strategies.

Understanding the PPA

Unlike virtual PPAs, where only guarantees of origin are transferred, this physical PPA ensures the direct delivery of renewable electricity and its associated guarantees to STMicroelectronics’ operations.
