UK Awards Ørsted and Iberdrola Major Contracts in 10 GW Offshore Wind Auction, Still Needs 31 GW More by 2030

Listen to this story:
  • The UK awards contracts for almost 10 GW of renewable energy, boosting offshore wind projects.
  • Major players Ørsted and Iberdrola secure significant contracts, but targets remain challenging.
  • Analysts warn that the UK still needs an additional 31 GW of offshore wind to meet 2030 goals.

The UK’s latest renewable power auction marks a significant step in reviving the offshore wind sector. Ørsted and Iberdrola were among the big winners, securing contracts for major projects like Hornsea 4 and East Anglia Two and Three, respectively. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated, “We inherited a broken energy policy, including last year’s disastrous auction round which gave us no successful offshore wind projects.” This auction supported nearly 10 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity, including offshore wind, enough to power around 11 million homes.

However, analysts express caution. Pranav Menon, a research associate at Aurora Energy Research, emphasized, “An additional 31 GW of offshore wind capacity is needed to meet the target” of 60 GW by 2030. This highlights the gap that remains despite the auction’s success.

The UK government, under Labour leadership since July, aims to decarbonize its electricity sector by 2030. This requires a substantial increase in renewable power capacity, especially offshore wind. The auction’s Contracts for Difference (CfDs) mechanism provides price guarantees for renewable projects, ensuring financial stability for developers amidst fluctuating market prices.

Still, the challenge persists. While the auction results show progress, achieving the UK’s ambitious offshore wind targets will require continued investment and supportive policies to attract developers and manage costs effectively.
