Gasunie is betting big on green energy to keep Dutch industry alive.

The state-owned gas grid operator announced plans to invest €12 billion ($13 billion) by 2030 to speed up the energy transition and prevent the exodus of major industrial players from the Netherlands.

The company is taking major steps towards a future in which sustainable gases and green electricity reinforce each other,Gasunie said.

Roughly two-thirds of the total investment will go into infrastructure for sustainable gases, including hydrogen and biomethane. The rest will support carbon capture and storage (CCS) efforts—another pillar of decarbonization.

Gasunie reported that the share of green projects in its total investments jumped from 20% to 45% last year.

The Dutch industrial sector has raised alarms over high energy costs and limited options to decarbonize. Meanwhile, the rapid expansion of solar and wind power is causing congestion on the national electricity grid, and plans for hydrogen production have stalled.
