Procurement’s Strategic Evolution

Procurement is emerging as a key player in managing risk and driving sustainability, according to the 2024 Economist Impact report sponsored by SAP. As businesses navigate a “state of permanent crisis,” procurement’s role in risk management and strategic alignment is gaining prominence in the C-suite.

Rising Confidence in Internal Risk Management

Executives’ confidence in procurement to manage internal risks has soared, with 83% expressing trust in 2024, a significant increase from 64% in the previous year. This growth underscores procurement’s alignment with organizational stakeholders, reinforcing its importance in business strategy.

However, external risks remain a challenge. Confidence in procurement’s ability to handle geopolitical shifts, supplier threats, and liquidity risks has dropped to 41%, down from 62% in 2023. As inflation, global conflicts, and commodity price fluctuations continue, procurement must stay agile to manage these complexities.

Diversifying Supplier Relationships for Resilience

To combat supply chain disruptions and shortages, 40% of executives are focusing on diversifying their supplier base. This strategic shift away from sole sourcing is critical in building resilient, long-term supplier relationships. The report highlights that businesses experience four supply chain disruptions daily, emphasizing the need for robust procurement strategies.

Visibility remains a top priority for organizations, driving investment in technology that enhances supply chain metrics, supplier connections, and alternative sourcing options. Tools leveraging AI and advanced analytics empower procurement teams to make data-driven decisions that boost efficiency and reduce risk.

Sustainability at the Forefront

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives are now a central focus for procurement, ranking second on the list of priorities for the next 12 to 18 months, up from fifth in 2023. As the report states, “Procurement’s work at the convergence between the business and wider supply-chain ecosystem offers it a unique strategic opportunity to lead the sustainability agenda.”

The introduction of new regulations like the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has propelled procurement into the spotlight. With 68% of business leaders now confident in procurement’s ability to deliver on ESG objectives, up from 49% last year, the function’s remit has clearly expanded beyond traditional cost management.

Compliance with these regulations is essential, as 39% of respondents view it as a driver for becoming more sustainable. Failing to meet governmental policies can result in penalties that stifle growth, making sustainability not just a moral imperative but a critical business concern.

Leveraging Technology for Sustainable Sourcing

Procurement’s influence in sustainability is also seen in the drive for digital transformation. By adopting platforms like SAP Business Network, organizations can enhance visibility, collaboration, and compliance, aligning procurement efforts with broader strategic goals. This technology has facilitated 780 million B2B transactions and $5.8 trillion in annual commerce, showcasing its impact across 190 countries.
