- Major SAF Agreement: IAG has signed a ten-year deal with Infinium for e-SAF, expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to conventional jet fuel, starting in 2026.
- Innovative Fuel Technology: Infinium’s e-SAF, made from water, waste CO2, and renewable energy, offers a scalable, feedstock-independent alternative to traditional fuels, supporting IAG’s five airlines.
- Sustainability Leadership: IAG, which used 12% of the global SAF supply in 2022, remains on track to meet its 10% SAF target by 2030, calling for policy support to accelerate SAF plant construction.
IAG’s Bold Step Towards Decarbonization
International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced a groundbreaking purchase agreement with e-SAF producer Infinium to bolster its sustainability efforts. Infinium will supply power-to-liquid e-SAF to the UK market starting in late 2026. This innovative fuel, produced from water, waste CO2, and renewable energy, reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by about 90% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Under the ten-year agreement, Infinium’s e-SAF will support all five IAG airlines: Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL, and Vueling.
Addressing Emissions with Advanced Fuels
IAG’s Group Sustainability Officer, Jonathon Counsell, highlighted the significance of SAF in achieving the company’s decarbonization targets:
“So far, we’re on track to deliver our 10% 2030 SAF goal, and agreements with innovators like Infinium are key to reaching this target. Aviation as an industry is working hard to decarbonize, and policy should focus on solutions such as SAF, rather than only increasing costs which risk affecting the competitiveness of the European aviation industry.”
Infinium’s CEO, Robert Schuetzle, emphasized the importance of such partnerships:
“We are proud that IAG has chosen Infinium to help towards its sustainability goals. Long-term, bankable commitments like these are what drive the ability to ramp up production of e-SAF, which is a critical milestone for the airline industry and for eFuels as an alternative to both fossil-based fuels and prior generations of SAF.”
Scaling Up e-SAF Production
The e-SAF will be produced at Infinium’s Project Roadrunner in West Texas, set to become the world’s largest e-SAF facility once operational. The project has secured funding from Brookfield Asset Management and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, further enabling its growth.
Driving Change in Aviation Sustainability
IAG is pursuing a multifaceted sustainability roadmap that includes investments in new aircraft, fuel efficiency initiatives, SAF production, and carbon removal technologies. With its leadership in SAF adoption and strategic partnerships, the group continues to pave the way for a greener future in aviation.
