Liverpool FC Unveils World’s First Carbon-Neutral Jersey with 1PointFive
Listen to this story:

  • First-of-its-kind sustainable football jersey: Each shirt’s carbon footprint is neutralized using Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology from 1PointFive.
  • Strategic partnership aligns sport with climate leadership: Liverpool FC joins global firms like Microsoft and Amazon in adopting carbon removal initiatives.
  • High-value branding meets ESG innovation: The commemorative jersey blends club legacy with forward-looking sustainability messaging.

Liverpool Football Club has launched the world’s first carbon-removed football jersey in collaboration with U.S.-based carbon removal firm 1PointFive, marking the 20th anniversary of the club’s iconic 2005 Champions League win in Istanbul.

The limited-edition LFC x 1PointFive jersey honors one of the greatest comebacks in football history — a 3-3 draw and penalty shootout victory over AC Milan — while setting a new benchmark in sustainable merchandise.

This shirt marks a world-first in football – and there’s no better occasion to do it than the 20th anniversary of that iconic night in Istanbul, said Lee Dwerryhouse, Senior Vice-President of Merchandising at Liverpool FC.

Each shirt’s carbon footprint is addressed through 1PointFive’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, which removes an amount of CO₂ from the atmosphere equivalent to that generated in the jersey’s production.

We’ve created a truly special piece for our supporters. Not only does it celebrate the past, but it also looks ahead to the future by supporting our sustainability goals, Dwerryhouse added.

Modelled by former LFC defender Sami Hyypiä, the jersey features “European Champions, Istanbul 2005” in gold stitching, with five stars under the Liver bird – a nod to the club’s decorated European history.

Our work together is a model for how organisations can use carbon removal technology to develop sustainable merchandise while engaging consumers in a new way,” said Michael Avery, President and General Manager at 1PointFive.

The collaboration extends Liverpool FC’s environmental strategy, The Red Way, and aligns the club with corporate climate leaders including Microsoft, Amazon, and Airbus — all of which have invested in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits through 1PointFive.

This initiative positions Liverpool FC not just as a footballing powerhouse, but as a brand pushing the boundaries of environmental responsibility in sport.
