Mercedes-Benz, DB Schenker Set Record SAF Deal to Cut 40,000 Tons of CO2 Emissions
  • Largest-ever SAF order by DB Schenker client
  • Reduces Mercedes-Benz’s emissions by 40,000 tons
  • Accelerates shift toward sustainable air freight

Mercedes-Benz made the largest single volume purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through logistics giant DB Schenker, significantly advancing low-emission logistics.

The record-setting procurement—approximately 13,000 tons of SAF—will slash Mercedes-Benz’s CO2e emissions by 40,000 tons, covering air shipments from Frankfurt to Beijing and Shanghai.

Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight at DB Schenker:

Achieving carbon neutrality is a long-haul journey. Our new biofuel agreement with our trusted partner Mercedes-Benz sets a new benchmark for sustainability commitments. By working together, we are actively and immediately reducing emissions in intercontinental supply chains. This contract represents one of the largest-ever SAF deals in the entire automotive and logistics industries globally. I look forward to seeing more customers join us.

Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight at DB Schenker

The move aligns with Mercedes-Benz’s strategic “Ambition 2039,” aiming to slash logistics-related CO2 emissions by 60% from 2021 levels.

Elke Pusskeiler, Head of Supply Chain Management, Mercedes-Benz AG:

“As part of our ‘Ambition 2039’ for Mercedes-Benz Cars, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions in logistics by 60% compared to 2021. Our sustainability strategy focuses on CO2 avoidance and on the reduction of emissions for all modes of transport in inbound and outbound. Utilizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel for air freight allows us to cut emissions. Together with DB Schenker, we made another significant achievement in our efforts for sustainable logistics.”

Elke Pusskeiler, Head of Supply Chain Management, Mercedes-Benz AG

SAF, derived from waste like used frying oil, cuts lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels. While SAF isn’t a complete solution to air transport emissions, it represents a significant step toward sustainable aviation.

Mercedes-Benz has partnered closely with DB Schenker for decades, across multiple logistics channels, highlighting both companies’ commitment to sustainability and emission reduction.
