SHEIN Boosts Sustainable Denim Production by 90% in 2024
Listen to this story:
  • Water savings: Over 10,000 metric tons of water saved in 2024 due to Cool Transfer Denim Printing.
  • Increased adoption: 380,000 denim pieces produced using the method, marking a 90% increase from 2023.
  • Worker safety: Reduced exposure to harmful chemicals, improving factory working conditions.

SHEIN has significantly ramped up its use of Cool Transfer Denim Printing in 2024, producing 380,000 denim pieces with this water- and energy-efficient method—a 90% increase from the previous year. This approach saved more than 10,000 metric tons of water compared to traditional methods.

Since adopting this technology in 2022, SHEIN has saved nearly 19,500 metric tons of water, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable supply chain practices. “These milestones demonstrate our ability to scale innovation while promoting resource efficiency,” a SHEIN spokesperson noted.

Traditional denim production requires substantial water and energy, particularly for dyeing, bleaching, and washing. In response, SHEIN partnered with NTX® in 2021 to implement Cool Transfer Denim Printing. The process involves using a digital printer with reactive ink to imprint designs onto white denim through a cold transfer technique, replicating effects such as faded finishes and retro-worn textures.

Verified Impact:

Bureau Veritas validated the water-saving claims in October 2023, confirming that the process reduces water usage by 70.5% compared to conventional washing.

Beyond resource conservation, this technology improves worker safety by eliminating exposure to harsh chemicals like chlorine and caustic soda. SHEIN highlighted its commitment to safer working conditions as a priority.

Efficiency Aligned with Demand:

Cool Transfer Denim Printing supports SHEIN’s on-demand production model, which starts with small product batches (100-200 items) and restocks based on customer demand. This digital-first approach minimizes overproduction and waste. The precision and flexibility of the printing process enable rapid scaling of popular designs without compromising quality.

Design Innovation:

The method also unlocks creative potential by allowing designers to produce highly detailed, intricate prints. “Cool Transfer Denim Printing lets us push creative boundaries with bold, standout designs that resonate with diverse customer preferences,” SHEIN’s design team stated.

This initiative underscores SHEIN’s broader strategy to lead innovation in resource-efficient fashion manufacturing.
