Bower Launches AI-Powered Recycling App in 170 Countries, Saving 7 Million kg of CO₂

From a modest beginning to a worldwide movement, Bower, the Swedish startup, has officially launched its groundbreaking recycling app across 170 countries. This milestone marks a significant step in addressing the global waste crisis through innovative technology and community engagement.

Global Expansion

Bower, known for its AI-powered recycling app, has expanded its mission from the Nordics and the UK to a global scale. The app is now accessible in over 170 countries, aiming to enhance waste sorting skills and recycling knowledge worldwide.

Impressive Stats

– Over 600,000 recyclers using the app

– A stellar 4.8 rating in the app store

– 7 million kg of CO₂ saved

AI-Powered Technology

The app leverages a state-of-the-art computer vision model developed with the support of Google.org. This model accurately identifies product types and materials, providing users with localized recycling instructions to ensure proper waste management, regardless of their location. Kate Brandt, Chief Sustainability Officer at Google, remarked, “Bower’s innovative app is tackling the global waste crisis head-on. We’re proud to support their mission and congratulate both the Bower and Google teams for their hard work and dedication.”

Community and Recognition

Bower’s innovative approach has garnered significant recognition, including winning Google.org’s Impact Challenge. This accolade brought not only funding but also a dedicated team of Google experts who worked pro bono to enhance Bower’s technology. The global launch highlights the collective effort and passion driving this initiative. Suwar Mert, CEO of Bower, stated, “Our journey from a simple idea to a global movement has been fueled by relentless dedication and a shared vision of a world free from trash. We’re excited to make a true impact, together.

How the App Works

Users can recycle and get rewarded with Bower by following these steps:

  1. Scan Your Packages: Scan barcodes on recyclables with the Bower app.
  2. Find Your Closest Bin: Use the app to locate the nearest recycling bin. Users can also add bins if none are available nearby.
  3. Recycle and Get Rewarded: Drop off recyclables and confirm in the app to earn XP.

“I’ve been testing the app for the last month and am impressed with how well it recognises materials. Congratulations to both the Bower and Google teams for their hard work and dedication to making a real difference in the fight against waste.” said Adam Elman, Head of Sustainability for Google Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Sort Your Waste

Users can earn XP and track CO₂ savings, turning recycling into a game while making a real impact on the planet.

Smart Recognition

The app allows users to easily identify materials, products, and brands—with or without barcodes—acting as a guide for proper waste sorting.

Fun Challenges

Bower includes challenges and competitions where users can earn experience points (XP), unlock levels, and collect trophies.

Track Your Impact

The app provides users with information on how much CO₂ they are saving, enabling them to see their positive impact grow.

Recycle Anywhere

Bower enables recycling wherever users are, connecting them with a global community working towards a cleaner planet.

Making a Global Impact

Bower’s global launch represents a significant leap in the fight against waste. By empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge to recycle correctly, Bower aims to contribute to a more sustainable world. The collaboration with Google.org underscores the power of technology and community in driving meaningful environmental change.
