Listen to this story:
  • Google partners with PacificLight Energy (PLE) and Rexus Bioenergy (RExus) for a 10-year renewable energy collaboration.
  • The Waste Wood-to-Energy (WWtE) plant will supply Google with clean energy, supporting its 24/7 carbon-free goal by 2030.
  • The innovative WWtE plant, co-developed by Sobono Bioenergy and V8 Environmental, will enhance energy efficiency and incorporate carbon capture technology.

Google, PacificLight Energy (PLE), and Rexus Bioenergy (RExus) have entered a 10-year collaboration. PacificLight will offtake renewable energy from RExus’s Waste Wood-to-Energy (WWtE) Plant and supply it to Google. This energy will be certified under the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) standard.

The clean energy from the new WWtE plant will support Google’s data centers and operations in Singapore, aligning with its sustainability goals to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

This biomass power plant will provide firm, clean, dispatchable power, supporting our goal to source 24/7 carbon-free energy in every grid where we operate.” – Giorgio Fortunato, Head of Clean Energy & Power for Asia Pacific, Google.

Jointly developed and invested by Sobono Bioenergy and V8 Environmental, RExus’s 13.2MW WWtE plant is a pioneering project in Singapore. It features circular synergy and best-in-class technologies, offering 10% higher efficiency than conventional Waste to Energy plants. The Plant optimizes the use of waste wood, including horticultural waste and wood from the logistics industry, converting them into energy.

The WWtE Plant, set to begin operations in 2026, will function 24/7 and include a pilot-scale carbon capture system. Captured CO2 will be used in innovative downstream applications, such as microalgae production and CO2-enriched greenhouse agriculture.

Our investment in Sobono Bioenergy is driven by our commitment to support renewable energy initiatives and become a low carbon energy company.” – Yu Tat Ming, CEO of PacificLight.

PacificLight Power, PLE’s parent company, has invested a 30% share in Sobono Bioenergy to develop the WWtE plant further.

RExus will be a frontrunner for Sobono Group in its pursuit of bioresource valorization, pushing the boundary of process innovation and circularity concepts.” – Oh Wee Khoon, Chairman, RExus.

This collaboration sets a new standard for the energy industry in Singapore, demonstrating the potential of technology and innovation in advancing clean energy targets.
