Google’s 2024 Environmental Report: AI and Sustainability in Action

Listen to this story:
|
- AI for Sustainability: We’ve optimized energy use, predicted extreme weather, and enabled carbon reductions. Our AI-powered fuel-efficient routing has enabled 2.9 million metric tons of GHG emissions reductions, equivalent to removing 650,000 cars from the road.
- Clean Energy Initiatives: We’ve achieved at least 90% carbon-free energy in 10 grid regions and maintained a global average of 64% carbon-free energy despite our increased electricity load. We also contracted 4 GW of clean energy generation capacity, more than in any prior year.
- Water Stewardship: We’ve nearly doubled our water replenishment portfolio and replenished an estimated 1 billion gallons of water, tripling our progress toward our water replenishment goal.
- Circular Economy: We achieved 100% plastic-free packaging for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable product design.
Harnessing AI for Environmental Impact
Google’s 2024 Environmental Report highlights the company’s strategic use of AI to drive environmental change and operate sustainably. By leveraging technology, Google aims to address the urgent need for energy transition and climate action.
Efficient AI Infrastructure
Google’s sixth-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is 67% more energy-efficient than its predecessor. These advancements enable a reduction in energy needed to train AI models by up to 100 times and cut associated emissions by up to 1,000 times. “Our research shows that these practices, when used together, can significantly reduce the environmental impact of AI,” Google noted in their report.
Sustainable Computing
Google’s data centers are about 1.8 times more energy efficient than typical enterprise data centers. In 2023, Google achieved an average annual power usage effectiveness of 1.10, compared to the industry average of 1.58. The report states, “Google-owned and operated data centers used about 5.8 times less overhead energy for every unit of IT equipment energy.”
AI-Driven Climate Solutions
Google leverages AI for various climate initiatives:
- Fuel-efficient routing: Reduced over 2.9 million metric tons of GHG emissions since 2021.
- Flood prediction: Global hydrological AI model predicts floods up to seven days in advance, aiding over 460 million people.
- Traffic optimization: AI-based Green Light tool reduces stops by up to 30% and emissions by up to 10% at intersections.
Commitment to Net-Zero Emissions
Since 2017, Google has matched 100% of its annual electricity consumption with renewable energy. The company now aims for net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030. “We have a bold goal to reach net-zero emissions and operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030,” the report emphasizes.
Water Stewardship and Circular Economy
In 2023, Google replenished an estimated 1 billion gallons of water, representing 18% of its freshwater consumption. Google’s new products feature packaging that is at least 99% plastic-free, with some products achieving 100% plastic-free packaging.

Challenges and Future Directions
Despite progress, Google’s GHG emissions rose by 13% in 2023, driven by increased data center energy consumption and supply chain emissions. The company is addressing these challenges by investing in clean energy projects, such as enabling 1 gigawatt of new solar capacity in Taiwan. The report underscores, “A sustainable future requires systems-level change, strong government policies, and new technologies. We’re committed to collaboration and playing our part, every step of the way.”
