Ride-hailing giant Uber has launched an electric motorbike service in Kenya, its first in Africa. The move is part of the company’s goal of making its global platform emissions free by 2040. Uber’s other markets in sub-Saharan Africa are Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.

The new service, called Electric Boda, will initially comprise 3,000 bikes, which will be rolled out across Nairobi and Mombasa over the next six months. Uber says that drivers will see a 30-35% drop in their operating costs, and users will pay 15-20% less than they do for a regular Uber motorbike trip.

“You will experience lower vibrations, less sound,”

said Kagiso Khaole, Uber’s general manager for sub-Saharan Africa.
