Leading Footwear Company Reclaims 90,000 Pairs of Shoes and Hits Sustainable Packaging Goals

Caleres recently published its second annual environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report. The document shares detailed progress against the company’s ambitious 2025 ESG Targets. According to leadership, many of these commitments are currently on track to be reached ahead of schedule.

Exceeding Environmental Benchmarks The 2021 report highlights significant wins in sustainable production and waste reduction. Notable achievements include:

  • Sustainable Packaging: 100% of shoeboxes for owned brands now use environmentally preferred materials.
  • Material Innovation: 52% of all products now use sustainable materials, with a goal of 100% by 2025.
  • Circular Economy: Caleres reclaimed, recycled, or refurbished 90,000 pairs of shoes in a single year.
  • Energy Efficiency: The company reduced energy use by more than 14% across its distribution centers and retail stores.

Supply Chain and Labor Standards Caleres is also driving transparency deeper into its global supply chain. Currently, more than 96% of strategic factories comply with heightened labor standards. Furthermore, the company led efforts with the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) to advance waste reduction across the entire industry.

Advancing Diversity and Inclusion Beyond environmental goals, Caleres enhanced its DE&I efforts last year. The company introduced specific goal-setting and implemented new training for all associates. These initiatives focus on recruiting diverse candidates and establishing Associate Community Resource Groups to foster a more inclusive culture.

“Our 2025 ESG Targets guide how we approach our work across the company,” said Chairman and CEO Diane Sullivan. “We are pleased with the progress we have made against these commitments.”
