Woodland Biofuels Invests $1.35 Billion in Louisiana for Renewable Fuels

Toronto-based Woodland Biofuels announced a $1.35 billion investment to build a renewable natural gas (RNG) and ultra-green hydrogen facility at the Port of South Louisiana. The facility, set to be located at the Globalplex facility, will use waste biomass to create sustainable fuels. The project is part of the company’s commitment to reducing emissions in sectors such as transportation, heating, and electricity generation.

Environmental Impact

The company highlights the environmental benefits of RNG, including reducing the reliance on natural gas and capturing harmful emissions. Phase 1 of the project is expected to remove 210,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, with Phase 2 anticipated to capture nearly 660,000 tonnes. These emissions would be stored underground, contributing to significant environmental benefits.

However, despite these benefits, RNG faces higher costs compared to natural gas. Prices for natural gas are currently down about 12% this year, further complicating the competitiveness of RNG.

Incentives and Support

To support this large-scale initiative, Louisiana Economic Development is offering $250 million in incentives. This package includes performance-based grants and workforce development solutions tailored to the project’s needs.

Woodland Biofuels has not disclosed further financial details or the exact production capacity of the facility. However, the project marks a major step in the company’s expansion and the renewable energy industry’s growth.
